 Synopsis

On April 15, 2017, 22 year-old Emanuel Balbo walked through the gates of the Mario Kempes Stadium in Cordoba, Argentina to cheer on his team Belgrano against their in-city rivals Talleres. At half-time of that tense derby, Emanuel became the 320th victim of the notoriously violent Argentinian soccer scene after coming across an old enemy inside the stadium. The man falsely yelled into the crowd of Belgrano supporters that Emanuel was an infiltrated Talleres fan and as a result, he was lynched and thrown from a stand by a young man who did not know him. IN THE CROWD follows the mothers of Emanuel and of his accused killer into the brutal and unforgiving world of Argentinian hooligans as both women struggle to find a rationale for a murder that horrified a soccer-crazed nation.
